The $10 fix that looked like a dead computer

Years ago I had a desktop that suddenly powered down mid-work and wouldn’t come back. I replaced the power supply. Nothing. So I rebuilt the entire system with all-new components, and it still wouldn’t power on from a known-good outlet. Then I swapped in a different power cord. It fired right up.

The culprit was a faulty power cord. Correct troubleshooting would have saved hundreds of dollars. That lesson is exactly how we approach every boot failure: test the simplest, cheapest causes first before assuming your computer is dead. A failing cord or outlet can perfectly mimic terminal hardware failure, and push you toward an unnecessary replacement.

What it’s usually hiding

What stops a computer from starting

Power (test this first)

A failing cord, dead outlet, or bad power supply mimics total hardware death. We always rule out the simplest, cheapest causes before anything else.

RAM or connections

Loose or failed memory and connectors can stop a boot cold, often an easy, inexpensive fix.

A failing drive or corrupt OS

Corrupt system files or a dying drive can halt startup. Sometimes repairable, sometimes a sign to back up fast.

Motherboard or deeper hardware

The expensive end of the range. If it’s a dead board, we’ll tell you straight and talk through repair-vs-replace.

Boot & startup FAQs

How much does boot / startup repair cost?
Most boot repairs land between $127 and $254, because the cause can be anything from a few corrupt system files to failing hardware. If a job looks like it’ll run past that, it becomes a different conversation. We stop and talk options before spending your money. Assessment is free, and you pay on results.
Why won’t my computer turn on?
It’s usually one of a handful of things: a power problem (cord, outlet, or supply), loose or failed RAM, a corrupt operating system, a failing drive, or, at the worst end, the motherboard. The only way to know is a proper diagnostic, starting with the simplest, cheapest culprits first.
Is my data safe if it won’t boot?
Usually, yes. If the problem is power, RAM, or the motherboard, your files are typically intact and recoverable. If the drive itself is failing, that’s when data is at risk, and where our data-recovery service comes in.
How long does it take?
Software-side fixes are often same-day, realistically 1–2 days. If it needs a hardware part, add the parts-order lead time. We set best / realistic / worst-case expectations up front.
