Power Jack & Charging Port Repair in Durango, CO
Tired of wiggling the cord to get a charge, or getting nothing at all? We track down why your laptop won’t charge and fix it, from a simple jack swap to a modern USB-C board.
Two very different repairs wearing the same symptom
“My laptop won’t charge” can mean two very different jobs. On older laptops it’s usually a classic barrel jack, a small, inexpensive part and about a half hour to fit and test. Straightforward.
But as laptops move to USB-C charging, that port usually lives on a daughter-board that costs more, and on some models it’s built right into the motherboard, a bigger repair. We figure out exactly which one you’ve got, rule out the simple stuff (a bad cord is the #1 cause), and give you the honest number before we touch anything.
Four things we check, cheapest first
The cord & adapter
A frayed cable or failing charger is the most common, and cheapest, culprit. We always rule this out first.
The battery
A worn-out battery can look like a charging-port problem. Quick to test, easy to rule in or out.
The charging port (jack)
A loose or broken port that needs you to wiggle the cord just right. Often a straightforward part swap.
The board
On USB-C laptops the port may sit on a daughter-board or the motherboard, a bigger, pricier job we’ll flag up front.
Charging & power jack FAQs
- How much does a power jack repair cost?
- For a traditional barrel-style charging port, it’s usually a small part plus about a half hour to fit and test it. Modern USB-C charging is different: the port often lives on a daughter-board (a pricier part), and in some designs it’s built into the motherboard, which is a bigger job. We tell you which camp your laptop falls into, and the real number, before any work.
- Why won’t my laptop charge?
- It’s one of four things: the cord or adapter, the battery, the charging port itself, or the board it connects to. We test the cheap, simple causes first. A bad cord is far more common than a dead motherboard, so you don’t pay for a big repair you didn’t need.
- Do you do board-level soldering?
- No, we don’t offer board-level soldering. Most charging-port repairs don’t need it; they’re a part replacement. If your specific laptop would require soldering a component onto the board, we’ll tell you honestly and walk you through the best path, whether that’s a board replacement or weighing repair against a new machine.
- My laptop charges with USB-C, is that different?
- Often, yes. USB-C charging ports are usually part of a daughter-board rather than a simple jack, so the part costs more, and on some models the port is integrated into the motherboard. It’s still very fixable. We’ll just be straight with you about what your particular model involves.
- How long does it take?
- A straightforward jack replacement is about a half hour once the part is in hand; daughter-board or board-level work takes longer. As always, we set best / realistic / worst-case expectations up front, plus any parts-order lead time.
